SCIENTIFIC ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORIES IN CHILE

VLT - CERRO PARANAL

One of the most important scientific observatories in the Southern Hemisphere and the planet. It is over 2,600 meters above sea level and 100 kms south of the Antofagasta City, in the Second Region of Chile. VLT, for its english acronym  (Very Large Telescope) is also known, has a system of four separate optical telescopes, surrounded by various instruments and each of these main tools is a reflecting telescope with a mirror 8.2 meters. The VLT is part of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the largest astronomical organization in Europe.
 

TOLOLO OBSERVATORY

Tololo Observatory: It was the first major astronomical center in Chile, opened in the early 60's. It is located in the mystical Elqui Valley, Coquimbo Region, at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level and consists of 8 telescopes and 1 radio telescope, with mirrors the size from 61 cm to 4.5 meters. Is currently the most attractive astronomical tourist center in Chile, but such visits are restricted only to tourism on Saturdays during the day and reservations must be made with a minimum of 2 months.

 

LA SILLA OBSERVATORY

In the limit of the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo, in the beginning of the driest desert in the world such as the Atacama, called the astronomical center, housed belonging to the European Southern Observatory. At an altitude climbs over 2400 meters above sea level, the La Silla observatory has 14 telescopes, optical mirrors with a diameter up to 3.6 meters and a 15 meter radio telescope, which transforms it into one of the largest and modern shopping astronomical observation of the world.

 

CHAJNANTOR TELESCOPES - ALMA PROJECT

Located in the Atacama desert pampa above 5,000 meters above sea level, Project ALMA (Atacama Large Array milimeter) will undoubtedly be from the year 2012, an impressive astronomical center composed no more than 64 giant radioantenas, 12 meters in diameter and that may be operated in an area ranging from 150 meters to 14 km.
